about

I was raised in the northern beaches, growing up on the shoreline of Palm Beach. My family were the founders of Gonsalves boat shed, a little fisherman’s shack right by the ferry wharf which was passed down for generations.

Using the shoreline and all textures I remember from my childhood, my love of creating began as a fluid process.

Enjoying the element of using clay, throwing on the wheel, making handmade pieces, using moulds as an avenue to express textures of shells, all topped off with a love of experimenting with glazing.

Waves Of emotion

Shaped from my childhood, I’ve always had a deep affiliation to the ocean, the connection which is so powerfully embodied in my soul. I’ve avoided feeling my grief, feeling anything at all, the loss of my parents at an early age, left me feeling hollow. I’ve found solace in my working through these powerful emotions on a journey as a ceramic artist.  I use the vessel as a canvas, to explore and express the waves of emotion, creating a shoreline.

Throwing vases, with layering found clay slips, textures, moulds of textures from the boat-shed and curved structures. Natural imperfections like a wave crashing onto the shore on a vase or rope entwined in it.  All the things I had kept stored inside of me eventually transcended from inside through to my hands, into my work.

NAUTILUS SERIES

This is making a dinner set around aesthetics and function with texture displayed in the different vessels. I think of shape and want to make something I haven’t seen before.

I aim for the mix between being appealing and embracing natural imperfections, that reflect the handmade craftsmanship.
